De-clutter and De-stress

Putting your items in storage units is a great way to declutter your home and open up your space. Before you start packing everything up, make sure you’re prepared. Keeping everything clean while it’s in storage will save you a lot of time and effort while keeping your items in tip-top shape.

Drawers

Prepare

  • Before moving items into your storage unit, clean your possessions. Wipe off any residue and stains.

  • Make sure kitchen appliances and tables don’t have any traces of food remnants or crumbs. Clean off everything dining-related to avoid unwanted insects.

  • Check for insects in boxes before you put your items in storage. A couple bugs will make more bugs, which is the last thing you want to find in your unit upon your return.

  • Remove moisture from anything that contains or uses water. This includes, fish tanks, washing machines, freezers, etc. Let them air dry to get rid of excess moisture and avoid mildew, mold, or water damage.

Storing Items

  • Cover furniture or dust-collecting items with a large sheet once it is inside the unit. This will prevent dirt from accumulating and unwanted scratches while you move things around.

  • Check on your unit. Coming back every once in a while to check on your possessions and do a quick cleaning will save you a lot of trouble when it’s time to remove an item. Dust and sweep your unit to keep dirt to a minimum.

  • Never put perishable items in your unit. Storing unsealed food is a sure way to lead to insects and an unpleasant smell at your return. Cans and jars that are factory-sealed should be OK, but meats and bread are always off limits. Click here for a complete list of things that should never go in your unit.
